group policy

by admin on Jan.26, 2010, under Server, XenApp

Lets say your group policy is not passed down from e hierarchical structure like AD and you have to manage each servers settings either via some scripting process or via manualy adding the settings to the local group policy yourself. Either way, there is chance for security concerns. Here is some decent documentation to follow, and build off of in the event you are looking for something to start from.  Any commentary is greatly appreciated! Commands used to lock down a terminal server or citrix/xenapp server for the standard, non administrative user. Continue reading “group policy” »

Slow PNAgent Response (icons)

by admin on Jan.25, 2010, under PNAgent

User Report: PNAgent is running very slowly. Upon a successful logon, the PNAgent indicates “Refreshing Applications” prompt for an excessive amount of time. While the Refreshing Applications prompt is visible, application icons look less than desirable and not until the refresh is complete do you get to see the more refined or detailed icons.

Server Specifications:

  1. XenApp Version 5.0
  2. Windows Server 2008 (x64)

Since the report is somewhat vague, lets first think about configuring userenv debug logging for several users in an effort to determine what may be going on with this specific scenario. Note: since this server happens to be Windows Server 2008, we will need to modify a few steps in order to successfully generate logs. Continue reading “Slow PNAgent Response (icons)” »

by admin on Jan.25, 2010, under XenApp

Citrix Admin Checklist:Most of us citrix/xenapp administrators already know…. If you have a scheduled weekend reboot for your farm, it is almost 100% necessary to check if everything is up and responsive prior to the next days production runs. After getting burned several times for completely preventable tasks, I started checking the following in an effort to make sure the farm is in a production ready status. Here is a quick rundown of my weekend checklist. Continue reading “Citrix Xenapp Admin Checklist” »

check host if laptop

by admin on Jan.22, 2010, under Workstation

Scenario:

We have a script which needs to be deployed to hosts across the domain footprint which needs to install a small application upon meeting certain criteria.  This seems to be a relatively easy task and can be easily accomplished in several ways. (example) One would be inclined to write a vbscript, use wmi, and enumerate some type of computer/vendor/model attribute prior to the install. To perhaps save some time, here is what we did and below is the criteria we used to make the decision through automation. Continue reading “check host if laptop” »

by admin on Jan.20, 2010, under Workstation

Had a question from somebody this morning asking about a host on the domain which a user reported was running very slowly. The technician was wondering if somebody could attach to the pc and see if they could find any ramped processes or issues with the host. Here is how we investigated the issue:
