Good morning says my computer with the following
error message:
After launching outlook - I got the following
error message:
- Your offline file cannot be configured.
-

- Followed by an additional error
complaining about my ost file being missing.
- Then I'm prompted with a form asking me
to locate my .pst file.
- The odd thing about this error is that I
can compose an email, but when i go to send
it, the email never leaves my outbox.
Apparently here is what the issue was. This
weekend we had a change control to update
several citrix servers from Office 2003 to
Office 2007. And since these servers were
located in a restricted area, I had to stage the
install files on a home share. And since there
are limits on utilization in the home share
space, I basically had to dump my pst files and
outlook ost files and place them somewhere else.
My intention was to complete the installs,
remove the staged install directory and relocate
the pst/ost files. Apparently office had some
other ideas.
As I was moving the pst/ost files from my
home share to the local drive noticed, i was
unable to relocate my .ost file. I figured
outlook or exchange had a handle on the file
somewhere so I went to my primary box and closed
Outlook 2007. I then tried to move file again
but was denied. After that last error, I moved
on to my other tasks.
Probably not the best fix, but here is how I
corrected the issue. Note: this error was
completely annoying.
- Open Control Panel (start > run > type
in "control" and hit enter)
- Under "adjust your computers settings"
and open "Mail (32-bit)
- Under Mail Setup - Outlook > select
E-mail accounts...
- Under the "e-mail" tab look for
"Microsoft Exchange" and click on the remove
button.
- Note: this task cannot be done from
within the outlook IDE.
- Under the "data files" tab remove any
pst files if possible.
- Open the registry and purge the
following HKCU keys:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook
(if exists)
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook
- reboot the pc and log back in
- Open Control Panel (start > run > type
in "control" and hit enter)
- Under "adjust your computers settings"
and open "Mail (32-bit)
- Under Mail Setup - Outlook > select
E-mail accounts...
- under the "e-mail" tab reconfigure your
exchange account
- click on "new"
- click on "microsoft exchange, pop3,
imap, or http" option and click on next
- don't worry about keying in the auto
account setup information if you are a
lan with exchange.
- click on "manually configure server
settings or additional server types" and
select next
-

- now click on "microsoft exchange"
and select next
- key in any exchange server
- then click on the "use cached
exchange mode" option
- key in your last name, first name
and click check name to locate your
acount
- click next to finish up the
configuration.
- open outlook and send off a test email
to yourself
- if you see some your note in your inbox
than you have successfully fixed the issue.
Oddly enough, the above probably is not the
most exquisite way to fix your cached exchange
mode explosion, and never explains what happened
to your old ost file to become corrupt. Nor does
it explain how to get back your old inbox data.
Simply stated, the above fix will get you back
in working order fairly quickly.
