Word frequency, what is it and why is it important?
The use of word counting, or word frequency is nothing new. Search engines and
AI networks use the concept of word frequency to analyze various forms of text
(files, html, php, etc..) in an effort to derive a weighted value for its
indexes.
A coworker and I were talking discussing the other day about
the value of word frequency and how it can be applied to many different
scenarios. He had also mentioned his wife (speech-language pathologist) and had
many different needs for a simple application.
Besides all of the great educational/research things you can
do with WF, here is my motivation:
.. analyze a complete series of words in seconds
.. seek out instances of very poor grammar and weight the results
.. derive a weighted list of word popularity
.. scrub out any words that would overall skew the results.
.. analyze presidential speeches for popular/weighted words
.. analyze economist commentary/papers and notes for popular/weighted words
.. analyze political commentary and find out perhaps what they are truly saying
